We hope you enjoy this first edition of the refreshed BCLTA Bulletin.
This communication piece is intended to keep you informed of events and developments in the public library community that we hope are of interest to you. It will continue to evolve as we link everything later this month to our redesigned website, where you will find much more news and resources to support your vital role as a public library trustee.
As with all BCLTA communication, we ask that each trustee on your board is provided with a copy. We would love to hear your thoughts on the new Bulletin and any suggestions you might have for content. Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

October is Canadian Library Month
Canada’s libraries foster connections between people, ideas, communities, and information. In October, these connections will be celebrated during Canadian (and BC) Library Month. The theme, “Libraries Connect,” highlights how libraries enable people to connect with others, foster the development of ideas, and promote the growth of strong communities.
Canadian Library Month provides an opportunity to celebrate libraries across Canada and the important contributions they make to Canadian life. For 2012 resources including the press release, declaration, backgrounder and ideas to help prepare your library for this year's celebration, visit the CLM website:
Gibsons Board of Trustees' CEO Search
The Gibsons and District Public Library Board has concluded a successful search for a new chief librarian, appointing Tracey Therrien to the position starting at the beginning of October.
As a small Public Library Association with no HR or support staff, the task at first blush seemed daunting. “We decided to hire a search consultant to help us through the process,” says Board Chair Donna McMahon. “This decision definitely streamlined the workload for the board; it also allowed for an objective evaluation of all applications, including internal ones.”
Despite hiring a consultant to do the heavy lifting, hiring a new CL still involved a lot of work for the board, according to Donna. But the commitment paid off: "I knew going into it that this was the single most important thing that any library board does, but I hadn’t realized that it would be such a tremendous team-building exercise, both for board members, and for building stronger relationships between the board and staff.”
Donna McMahon is happy to speak to other library trustees about the Gibsons CEO search; you can contact her directly at email@example.com
