BCLTA Bulletin

March 2014

Two calls for nominations open this month:  one for the annual BCLTA awards, and one for trustees interested in serving on the BCLTA board. We encourage you to consider putting forward the names of those trustees who have made exemplary contributions to their board and to BC public libraries in the last year, as well as those who might like to expand their contribution to their communities through participation in BCLTA activities and decision making.

Libraries and Literacy Renamed Libraries Branch

Organizational changes within the Ministry of Education have led to the renaming of the Libraries and Literacy Branch to the Libraries Branch.  The five existing positions dedicated to public libraries continue to report to Assistant Deputy Minister Paige MacFarlane through Acting Director Beverley Shaw, while the four Literacy positions have been moved elsewhere in the Ministry.

The BCLTA is working with our partners, the BC Library Association and the Association of BC Public Library Directors, to continue our ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Education.  As always, we will communicate to our membership regularly on our activities and progress in advocating for BC's public libraries.

Terrace Public Library Receives Federal Grant

Terrace Public Library recently unveiled the library's new elevator, funded in part by a $50,000 grant from the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF).  The elevator better connects the main floor and the lower level which contains the Terrace Art Gallery. The project also included the construction of a publicly accessible washroom.
