BCLTA Bulletin

Elections 2014

Elections -- whether they are local, provincial or federal -- offer unique opportunities to advocate for public libraries.  For trustees, it may be the single greatest opportunity to increase awareness about the important community services libraries provide, as well as our successes and challenges.

In this issue of the BCLTA Bulletin, we offer a new document outlining what trustees can do to champion their libraries leading up to the municipal elections in November. We also report on the BCLTA and partners' recent meeting with the Minister of Education, and link you to the podcast of a national radio program that asks (and attempts to answer) the question: "What is the future of libraries in the age of Google?"

Keeping Libraries Front and Centre

This year, the BCLTA board has developed an advocacy strategy document specifically for municipal elections.  Municipal Elections 2014 – Keeping Libraries Front and Centre breaks down the key audiences and offers a number of ideas to help you raise the profile of libraries and library issues during the municipal campaign.

Meeting with the Minister

Representatives of the BCLTA, BCLA, ABCPLD and BC Libraries Co-op met once again with the Minister of Education during the recent Union of BC Municipalities convention in Whistler.

Minister Fassbender reiterated a commitment to status quo funding levels for public libraries -- $14 million per year -- for the next three years. He also confirmed that a decision about the Libraries Branch Director position will be made by the end of the calendar year.
