BCLTA Bulletin

January 2015

Happy New Year to all, and a warm welcome to new public library trustees.  We hope that the BC Library Trustees Association will become your "go to" source of information and support as you assume your new role.

This e-newsletter will arrive for you monthly, forwarded by your board chair or library director.  Many of the articles link to our website (www.bclta.ca) where you will find comprehensive resources to assist you as a board member.  The website hosts a members tab with many useful publications -- and later this year, webinars -- you can access for free with your library's password.

The BCLTA also offers orientation training to both new trustees and new chairs, and we urge you to take advantage of them.  Finally, our annual conference takes place in Richmond on May 22 and 23 this year, where you can participate in networking and educational sessions designed by trustees for trustees.

Please let us know of any questions you may have -- we are here to help!

Public Libraries Reimagined

In the fall of 2014 the Aspen Institute convened an important panel discussion entitled 'Public Libraries Re-Imagined', during which presenters discussed how the role of public libraries has expanded beyond offering books. More than ever, libraries are a space where community members of various age groups learn important skills for personal and professional development.

A series of YouTube videos covering this event highlight different services that libraries offer to help their community members learn new things and gain new knowledge. They also strive to answer the question of why libraries matter now, as well as how libraries will continue to matter moving forward.
